Summer Camping Print

Boy Scouting in Troop 299 is a year-round program and some of the best happens once school is out! Most of our scouts participate in a resident, week-long summer camp for 4 years.  As they mature, our older scouts look for more excitement so our troop offers challenging High Adventure outings, too.

Summer Camp
If your scout does nothing else this summer, make it be a trip to a BSA Summer Camp!

For many years, Troop 299 has spent a week at Camp Conestoga. It is a beautiful and modern camp situated in the Laurel Highlands region of Pennsylvania, near Ligoneer. The staff offers an excellent Pathfinder program for first year scouts, where they will learn many of the skills necessary for the Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks. Many different merit badges can be earned as well as other challenges that provide a tremendous amount of fun. Boys return from summer camp with a strong sense of what scouting is about.  Adults may attend subject to space. Drivers are always needed. Look for details in the Spring.

Other excellent summer camp venues and dates are available should there be a conflict with Conestoga.

High Adventure
Troop 299 offers high adventure camping. Past treks have included hiking at the BSA Philmont facility in NM, Sea Base sailing cruises, back-country canoeing in Canada, conquering the White Mountains, and hiking in Glacier and the Great Smoky Mountains. Scouts must be at least 14 years old and First Class to participate in the week-long, back-country outings. Some outings also have fitness requirements. These outings are not for the beginning Boy Scout but knowing that these adventures exist can be a huge incentive. See an Assistant Scoutmaster for more information about upcoming high-adventure outings!

Mid-Level Adventure
Our troop strives to organize an extended, summertime trek that is accessible to all levels of scouts. While not usually as strenuous as High Adventure, they are multi-night and rigorous. These events are contingent upon scheduling of other summertime activities, leader and parent availability, and of course interest by the scouts themselves. Some summers, the mid- and high-adventure outings are combined.

And there is more!
There are National Youth Leadership Training courses (Nagatamen, Eagle Feather), Order of the Arrow events, and whatever else a patrol wants to undertake.
