Philmont Adventure 2025

Philmont is our most popular high adventure. In mid-June, we stayed at Great Wolf Lodge for a night, and then spent 12 nights on the trail, covering 77 miles and hiking from 6000 ft to 12,441 ft. None of us will forget how we summited Mount Baldy (12,441 ft) and Tooth of Time (9003 ft). The views were spectacular and so were the memories .

In November, we went to Camp Birch for our annual Shoot-o-ree: shotgun, rifle and archery . Everything was closely supervised by our experienced and trained adults. We also had our award-winning dessert competition. Ravens won, but watch out for next year!

Conestoga 2025

A scout favorite, every July we make the 4-hour drive to Camp Conestoga in Pennsylvania. The week is filled with swimming, canoeing , sailing , fishing , zip-lining, hiking , games and more . At night we sit around the campfire, laughing and telling stories. Not only do we earn a lots of merit badges, but it's a great time to be with friends .

Kelleys Island 2025

In May, we went to Kelleys Island near Sandusky, Ohio. It was sunny and warm, and perfect for a bike ride around the island. Highlights were stopping at The Glacial Grooves and the quarry , where we played "Infection" and ran through the winding trails to escape. We had lunch and the best ice cream in town before heading back to camp, tired but happy.

The annual Back to Basics camping trip did not disappoint! A great time was had by new and veteran scouts alike, including traditions like capture the flag and lemon squeeze. It was great welcoming the new scouts into the troop.

Backpacker 2025 - Tar Hollow

Troop 299 ventured to Tar Hollow in March for an overnight backpacking outing. The outing also served as shakedown for the scouts and adults who are going to Philmont this June. The weather cooperated and it was a fun outing!

Troop 299 ventured to a new ski resort for the 2025 Snow Sport Outing. We enjoyed the Seven Springs Ski resort staying nearby at Camp Tenacharison. Everyone enjoyed a full day of skiing and snowboarding!

For our September outing, we traveled to the Red River Gorge area in Kentucky for a climbing adventure. Via Ferrata is a style of climbing where climbers traverse horizontally along fixed steel cables. After climbing, the troop hiked to the top of the natural bridge in the Red River Gorge.

Boundary waters canoe adventure!

For this year's High adventure, we went to the Boundary waters in northern minnesota! Our route took us straight along the border of the U.S and Canada, which meant plenty of amazing photo opportunities! Along the way we ate at multiple amazing restaurants, and worked with an outfitter to give us the Canoes, paddles, and more. Not only did we canoe a lot, we also fished, cooked, and and swam as a troop. Overall, it was a really fun experience, and we'll be back in 2028!

A full week of adventure!

One of troop 299's biggest outings is our summer camp, Camp Conestoga, which is located near Somerset, PA.

During this week of fun, scouts can earn merit badges, signoffs, or simply learn more about scouting! Camp Conestoga is one of the best outings for scouting advancement. At Conestoga we also do plenty of extra activities, Including campfires, competitions between troops, and skits. We also get three meals a day from the dining hall, but there is one evening we get to cook our own food. And don't forget to save money for the trading post, which has things including merch, food, and other items.

White water rafting 2024

Every year, our troop does the white water rafting outing. In this outing, scouts get to go onto the water and practice paddling and swimming skills, along with making friends and memories.

Weekend adventure in the Commonwealth of Kentucky

We have so many fun adventures, it's hard to choose a favorite. This weekend, we went down to Kentucky and kayaked in a cave system - and hiked the Natural Bridge trail. We camped and cooked in patrols with food provided by our Scout grubmaster.

It gets busy around the holidays so a Troop tradition is a "lock-in" event for the December outing. This year, the Scouts chose Vertical Adventures - an indoor rock climbing experience. We took turns climbing all kinds of different routes - and working the belays. Before crashing around 2 AM, we had a pizza party!

A favorite outing! Conducted at Camp Birch - this outing combines education, camaraderie and skill-building in a safe and supervised environment. Under the watch of trained instructors, Scouts learn and demonstrate their skills in archery, .22 rifle, even shotgun!

You can go for the merit badges, or just have fun. After dinner, the Scouts have a dessert competition to cap off the day!

Summer Camp in south-western Pennsylvania

Troop 299 has a long tradition of attending summer camp at Camp Conestoga - near Somerset, PA.

During the week-long experience, there's opportunities to earn merit badges, swim, fish and perform a conservation project. Some evenings are highlighted by a campfire, others may have competitions like "anything that floats" between the Troops. A dining hall serves us three squares a day, and one night we get to cook our own meal in camp! Save some money for the trading post, which is stocked with candy and souvenirs.

Kelleys Island 2023

For our may outing troop 299 finally brought back it's Kelleys island trip where the scouts enjoyed biking around the island with wonderful views of Lake Erie. Scouts were also able to stop at a local pizza place in the small downtown area of the island. The troop kicked off the afternoon off with a fun game of infection in a small repurposed cory. Later in the afternoon the scouts rapped up the day by exploring near the campground and enjoying some ice cream. The photos can be found here .

Back to Basics Outing 2023

This April Troop 299 had it's annual Back-to-Basics outing. On this outing the scouts spent the morning rotating through 5 different stations, which were Axe yard, Fire Building, First Aid, Fitness, and patrol box. After lunch the troop took a hike to the lemon squeeze where the scouts got to climb through some awesome rock formations and shortly after finished off the day with a game of capture the flag. Mega Cavern Zip Line Outing 2023

Our March outing our troop decided to try something new where our scouts got the opportunity to go zip lining in the Louisville Kentucky Mega Caverns. The scouts got to experience six different zip lines and two rope bridges. Later in the afternoon the scouts got to choose where they went out for lunch at near by local restaurants. Rickenbacker Army National Guard Aviation Support - Visit 2023

On February 21 on of our Tuesday scout meetings our troop got a chance to visit Rickenbacker Army national Guard Blackhawk helicopter facility. The scouts were able to obtain lots of exciting knowledge on how the Blackhawks function and what they are used for. Our February outing was our yearly Klondike outing where our scouts went to Camp Lazarus to compete in the Simon Kenton Councils District Klondike where the scouts were put to the test in challenges such as setting up a tent blindfolded to racing one of our troop sleds in a timed event, to make for an enjoyable weekend. Our January outing was our annual Snow Sports outing where a small but mighty group of scouts got to push themselves outside their comfort zone and try a hand at skiing or snowboarding. All of the scouts really enjoyed the outing from skiing down the mountain to watching movies and eating pizza in the evenings at the lodge we stayed in.

Play CBUS Lock In 2022

Our December outing was our Lock In where the scouts went to Play CBUS. The turn out was great and the scouts had a blast climbing past mid night and enjoyed pizza and an all you can drink soda fountain for dinner, for an exiting night on the ropes courses, climbing/via ferrata walls, and obstacle courses. Our November Outing was our Annual Shoot-O-Ree at Camp Birch where all scouts participated in rife, archery, and shotgun shooting sports. Later in the evening the scouts also participated in the troop famous dessert competition. All of the patrols had to use a Dutch Oven and their superior baking skills to make their dessert. Zaleski Backpacker 2022

On Our October outing, the scouts went hiking at the Zaleski State Park for our annual backpacker. They hiked 12 miles carrying all of their need materials for the weekend including tent, cloths, food, water, and sleeping gear, for an exiting weekend enjoying being deep in the wilderness. Philmont 2022

On July 16, fifteen Scouts and seven adults from Troop 299 set off for the adventure of a lifetime in northeastern NM, home to the expansive Philmont Scout Ranch. Crews 718-J-01 and 02 split off into different adventures, both in Philmont's north country. Both crews completed the summit of Mt. Baldy's 12,441 foot peak, hiked many miles, endured challenges and participated in many activities not found anywhere else in Scouting. The photos for Crew 1 can be found Here. Boundary Waters 2021

Crew #1- Boundary waters was so fun we saw 5 beavers and caught some fish we also saw a beautiful sunset. As well as a bunch of eagles. - ASPL

Crew #2- We had a fantastic time paddling and portaging 26 miles in northern Minnesota. We got to catch, cook, and clean fish, and see a moose with its babies. The sunsets were beautiful and the Eagle flying just over my head was by far the best part - SPL

Summer Camp 2021

Troop 299 had a fantastic week at Camp Conestoga in Pennsylvania from earning roughly 202 Merit Badges, and presenting a fantastic original skit at the Wednesday night campfire. The Troop had fun with our spirit days such as Mustache Monday, OSU Wednesday, and Hawaiian Friday. We even had an awesome time with our Troop fire building competition and dance party loud enough for the whole camp to hear us. -SPL

Whitewater Outing 2021

On May 21st-23rd the Troop went on the highly popular Whitewater rafting outing! Scouts spent 3-4 hours on the West Virginian rivers, tackling up to Class Five rapids! Scouts enjoyed a riverside lunch, free soda drink tokens used in camp, and a hot shower at the end of the day. For many younger Scouts this was their first time whitewater rafting, and they cannot wait for next year!

Welcome new Scouts!

We were able to hold a full two-day Back to Basics this year! This is the outing where basic Scout skills such as fire building, knots, first aid and cooking is taught. This helps to prepare new Scouts for the adventures ahead, and get them started with their sign-offs for the first ranks.

During the day, the Scouts rotated to teaching stations, and cooked all their meals. In the evening we had a campfire. There was even time for capture the flag and the lemon squeeze at Falling Rock Scout Camp!

Evergreens Patrol Outing 2021

The Evergreens Patrol decided to hold their outing in Highbanks Metro Park. While there, the scouts went on a hike and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. They also carried on the patrol tradition of having all the new scouts in the patrol sign the patrol flag.

On March 13th and 14th, Troop 299 held its first backpacker of 2021. Scouts and adults got to hike and spend the night in the scenic Tar Hollow state park. Scouts had a fun time getting to experience what scouting has to offer.

Search and Rescue 2021

On February 20th, Troop 299 held it's first ever search and rescue outing. Scouts received the opportunity to learn about how search and rescue operations are conducted and take part in a training exercise meant to simulate the task of rescuing someone during winter.

Klondike 2021

On January 22nd and 23rd, Troop 299 had its annual klondike. There, scouts got to experience camping in the winter cold as well as learn many skills such as first aid, orienteering, knot tying, and fire building. Scouts got to participate in fun activities and competitions that applied the skills they learned.

Troop 299 held it's annual Shoot-O-Ree November 6-8th. At this event, scouts and adults received the opportunity to spend the night camping, fire rifles, shotguns are participate in archery. A troop favorite, there was a high turn out to this event and lots of fun was had that weekend.

Scouting for Food 2020

Scouting for food is an annual troop activity that helps support the local food pantry. On October 13, scouts travelled through the communities in the surrounding area and gave a bag with a flier to every household. These fliers requested donations of food that could be given to the Dublin Food Pantry. On October 17, scouts returned to the community to collect any donations that were made. In total, troop 299 collected over 1000 pounds of food for the Dublin Food Pantry which are being used to help those that need it.

Amazing Race 2020

The amazing race is a district run event that took place on October 18th. The event was a scavenger hunt for Webelos scouts that involved the scouts finding stations being run by different boy scout troops. Troop 299 ran a station where the Webelos got to make slime.

Hiking at Zaleski, COVID style

Our backpacker is an mid-level adventure as it involves hiking six miles on Saturday, then camping in the back-country with only what you could carry. On Sunday we hike about four miles out. We carried our water, food, tents, sleeping gear and extra clothes. The rain held off, but we were prepared! Zaleski is a pretty area in the Hocking Hills region of south-central Ohio. Nearby is the spooky Moonville tunnel!

Fall 2020 Court of Honor

Every few months, Troop 299 holds a Court of Honor which is an awards ceremony to celebrate achievements earned. This includes rank advancements, merit badges and special awards. Due to the pandemic we held the ceremony "hybrid", the presenters were at our usual location in the church sanctuary, but most of the audience was at home on a Zoom call. Our next Court of Honor will be in December.

Welcoming New Scouts to Boy Scout Camping

We had to delay our first real campout due to the pandemic. Back to Basics is usually held in April, but it was in September this year. We had a good time at Otter Run campground, where the new Scouts rotated to different stations that were run by the older Scouts.

Scout Skills such as knife and ax safety, first aid, athletics and fire-building were taught. This helped the new Scouts to get some sign-offs on their rank requirements!

Indian Run Falls is cleaner than we found it

This summer several Troop 299 Scouts helped the City of Dublin by cleaning up the Indian Run Falls - which is behind the post office on Bridge Street. We helped to clean out a lot of trash and left this pretty hidden spot better than we found it!

Conestoga - July 2020

Troop 299 had an amazing week at Camp Conestoga in Somerset Pennsylvania from July 5th-11th. The troop brought 10 scouts 5 of which this was their first ever summer camp. The Troop was also accompanied by 2 scouts from Troop 111.

Despite COVID-19 it was a stellar week and the troop was able to earn 45 merit badges, and 2 camp awards. The scouts also had the opportunity to participate in many extra activities such as the polar bear swim, run for your life, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, small boat sailing, and fishing in the camp lake.

Back at camp the scouts played cards, built fires, worked in the axe yard, and were able to complete many many requirements to help them in rank advancement.

The troop also participated in the OA tapout on Wednesday night where one of the scouts with us from Troop 111 was inducted into the Order of the Arrow scoutings national honor society. Also the troop participated in a flag retirement ceremony on Thursday night.

Online Troop Meetings and Sign-Offs

Online Troop Meetings, Scoutmaster Conferences and Sign-Offs!

Scouts in troop 299 have been online video conferencing in order to keep the scouting activities for Newer Scouts happening. The PLC team led by the SPL hosts weekly Troop and Patrol Meetings. They also are hosting daily sign-off sessions for ranks Tenderfoot through First Class.

Air Force Museum March 2020

Last weekend our scouts visited the Dayton Air Force museum for a day trip. The scouts had a very educational trip and learned a lot about the Air Force during. On this outing scouts were able to tour the Museum and view some of the United States Air Forces oldest machines and tools. This photo is right before entering the large museum.

This weekend the scouts went on a skiing adventure

Last weekend the annual skiing outing took place. This was a great opportunity for scouts to try skiing and snowboarding for the first time and it turns out that many of them enjoyed it a lot. This outing was a great success.

Last Sunday was our annual Scout Sunday. Each year, we help with a church service to show our support for the church that hosts our troop and pack. Scouts helped with preparing food, ushering, greeting people and holding doors, setting up breakfast, serving breakfast and cleaning up.

For our January Klondike this year, Troop 299 went out to Marmon Farms which is about 30 miles northeast of Dublin. There we camped two nights and rode horseback on Saturday. We cooked over an open fire and told stories around the campfire. There's a bunch more pictures here .

At Vertical Adventures, you get to rock climb indoors until past midnight! We had an awesome time trying out the various climbing routes, and then had pizza. We didn't get much sleep and want to come back next year!

Shoot O Ree 2019

This outing, the boys went to Camp Chief Logan camp in Southern Ohio. On the outing, they shot shotgun, rifle, and archery in a patrol competition. The competition includes members from each patrol shooting to earn the most patrol points. There is a desert competition Saturday night, where each patrol cooks a desert and is judged on it. The boys can also earn merit badges on this outing, and get the opportunity to shoot, clean, and learn about firearms.

Backpacker 2019

This outing, the boys hiked the loop at Zaleski State Forest. Through hills and valleys with packs weighing from 10-35 lbs they traveled roughly 12 miles, rain or shine. After arriving late Friday night, the boys set up camp for the night. Early the next morning, they set out on their expedition through Zaleski in nice weather for the time being. After a few hours of hiking, they stopped for a break for lunch at an overlook on a ridge, viewing over the hills of southern Ohio. They made it to camp earlier then expected, and made Mountain House style dinners. The next morning, it began to rain, but the boys trekked through it another few miles, through a cave, back to the Hope Iron Furnace.

Climbing Outing

For the September 2019 climbing outing, the scouts of Troop 299 drove 3+ hours to Red River Gorge of southern Kentucky. They climbed through 6 courses using the Via Ferrata technique, where they were tethered to a steel cable going throughout the course. They also visited a Natural Bridge. Conestoga 2019

The boys of Troop 299 spent another week at Camp Conestoga. They earned merit badges, awards, rank advancements, and other accolades. At camp, the first year scouts took pathfinder. Pathfinder is where new scouts learn the core ideals of scouting, and earn many requirements towards the rank of first class. They learned knots, first aid techniques, knife safety, and fire safety. Other scouts took a maximum of 7 courses at the program areas, Scoutcraft, Lake, Pool, Cope, Handicraft, Nature, and the Trading Post. Many do not fill up all 7 summits, and 1 or 2 off that they spend back at camp or at the Trading post.

Philmont 2019

Troop 299 sent two crews in 2019 to the pinnacle of Scouting

Philmont has awed Scouts and Scouters for the better part of a Century. After losing last year's season due to the Ute Park fire, Philmont was prepared to welcome a record number of participants this year, eager to enjoy the natural wonders and epic programs.

On June 16, twelve Scouts and eight parents from Troop 299 set off for northeastern NM, home to the expansive Philmont Scout Ranch. Crews 618-Y-01 and 02 split off into different adventures, both in Philmont's north country. Both crews completed the summit of Mt. Baldy's 12,441 foot peak, hiked many miles, endured challenges and participated in many activities not found anywhere else in Scouting.

Memorial Day Senior Center Visit

Troop 299 Scouts visited Sunrise of Dublin Senior Center on Memorial Day to meet with residents, and performed a flag raising ceremony.

Kelleys Island 2019

Lake Erie Adventure

Troop 299's May 2019 adventure was Kelleys Island on Ohio's Great Lake Erie! We ferried over with our bikes and spent the day on Saturday biking the island: Glacier Grooves, Inscription Rock, the 4-H camp, airport, and had lunch in town.

After an afternoon of hiking the quarry, we made dinner in camp. Unfortunately we had to leave Saturday evening due to predicted bad weather the next day affecting the ferry service back to the mainland. We normally would camp through bad weather, but the ferry did cancel on Sunday and we avoided being stranded.

An introduction to Scouting

Back to Basics is the first camp out after Webelos cross over from Cub Scouts in the Spring. A tradition on Friday night is ice cream! On Saturday, Troop 299's youth leadership organizes stations during the day to teach basic Scout skills. This is followed by games, and a campfire! We had a little rain for 2019, but it did not deter our spirit!

Scouting for Food

Troop 299 collected over 500 pounds of food for Dublin Food Pantry

Troop 299 fanned out across several Dublin neighborhoods, leaving bags and instructions for generous residents to fill them. Several days later, we returned and picked up the food and delivered it to Dublin Food Bank. We collected over 500 pounds!

Snow Sports 2019

Troop 299 ventured to Brandywine ski resort for a day of skiing, snowboard and tubing! We stayed at Camp Manatoc nearby in a cabin.

Klondike 2019

Troop 299 braved the January cold to participate in Buckeye District's Klondike, held January 25-27 at Camp Lazarus! We competed against other troops in team competitions, many involving the sled we assembled! After the day, we bundled up for a chilly overnight in tents! It was "intense". Shoot-o-Ree 2018

One of the scout favorites, the Shoot-o-ree Outing is definitely always a blast. On this unique outing, scouts get the opportunity to shoot firearms. For many of the scout and parents, this is their first time being able to shoot a firearm. Scouts are able to shoot recurve and compound bows, 12 and 20 gauge shotguns, and .22 rifles.

At the end of the day, the patrols participated in a patrol shooting competition. Each patrol sent out scouts to shoot the shotguns, rifles, and bows and compared scores. After dinner on Saturday, the patrols also participated in desert competition. The scores for the shooting competitions and dessert competitions were then added up. The winner of the annual Shoot-o-ree Patrol Competitions is the Chilli Peppers.

Although not everyone won, all the scouts were good sports about it. Everyone also had lots of fun.

Backpacker 2018

Scouts on our troop went on what is probably the most intensive outing out troop arranges, which is the Backpacker. As the name suggests, the backpacker is a backpacking outing where scouts carry backpacks with everything they need for the night and hike in the woods. Our troop goes to the Zaleski State Forest and hikes 6 miles the first day, camp for the night, then hike 5 miles the second day.

During all this, our scouts had to overcome a water scarcity due to a broken pump at camp. Our scouts used ingenuity and perseverance to overcome this large challenge. Although hard, everyone made the journey and was able to feel proud at the end of this outing. The Backpacker is definitely one of the most satisfying outings.

Canoe & Kayak 2018

The canoe and kayaking outing is an outing that our troops holds annually. During this outing, scout members gets to canoe or kayak down a river. To start the outing, the scouts arrived late Friday night. They spend the night camping by the outfitters. This year, scouts went 10 miles down the Little Miami River.

That’s right, 10 miles. In the process, scouts also went under the tallest bridge in Ohio (the Jeremiah Morrow Memorial Bridge on !-71). The ended the day in there tents and headed home on Saturday.

Boundary Waters 2018

Over the summer of 2018, a group of scouts for troop 299 embarked on a journey in the Boundary Water Canoe Wilderness in Minnesota. This Boundary Waters trip was Troop 299's annual high adventure where scouts spend a week in the wilderness.

During this adventure, scouts canoed for campsite to campsite and portaged between lakes and around rapids. Throughout this journey, scouts enjoyed fishing, swimming, canoeing, and much more. Although there were many struggles throughout this adventure, everyone had a good time.

Camp Conestoga 2018

A week in the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania

During summer break, boys from Troop 299 attended camp Conestoga. Camp Conestoga is an immense BSA summer camp in Pennsylvania. There, boys learned numerous scouting skills that can be applied to their regular lives. At camp, the younger scouts learned core scouting skills like the scout law and oath, knots, fire safety, and basic orienteering. Simultaneously, the older scouts worked on merit badges and leadership skills, inching closer and closer to achieving the rank of Eagle.

Here, scouts experienced one the the best ways to earn merit badges. All the boys, young or old earned at least 1 merit badge, and everyone learned something for sure. Although tired, everyone had a feeling of satisfaction as they came home.
